UV light degrades collagen in the skin and decreases synthesis of new collagen, damaging both the epidermis and the lower dermal layer.  The skin becomes thinner and less elastic.

Exposed skin develops an uneven colour and texture resembling chicken skin. This is termed poikiloderma and is frequently found on the side of the neck. Extended exposure to sunlight also leads to dilated and broken blood vessels on the face and pigmentation, or age spots.

Avoid photoaging and reduce the likelihood of developing skin cancers with good preventative care.

The answer?  Cover up. Use a good spf sunblock, clothing, a hat and sunglasses or shade.


Age, UV exposure and weight loss can leave you with lax skin. This can be most noticeable along the jawline and neck.

Broccoli & Cashew Soup
– makes 6 portions.A creamy and versatile soup. Add other vegetables and flavours according to what is in season and in your refrigerator.

  • 150g cashews
  • 1.25 litre stock
  • olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 head broccoli, including stalk, chopped
  • 2 Stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 tsp basil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • pepper
  • nutmeg


  1. Put the cashews and 250ml of the stock in a blender and blend until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Heat the oil in a large pan and fry the onion, celery and garlic, until soft. Add  the remaining stock. Cover and simmer for 5 mins.
  3. Stir in broccoli and basil and simmer for 10 mins.
  4. Stir in the cashew mixture, seasoning and bring to simmer before removing from the heat.
  5. Blend and serve in individual bowls with a swirl of natural yogurt or cream and a sprinkle of parsley, basil or Parmisan cheese.
